The camera you'd install on a Sydney home in 2026 looks similar to one from five years ago, but what's happening inside it and the app behind it has moved on a fair way. Here's what's genuinely different, and what still hasn't changed at all.
What's new with on-camera AI detection?
Cameras can now tell the difference between a person, a vehicle and a parcel on their own, without sending footage to the cloud to be analysed. Ubiquiti's UniFi Protect, Hikvision's AcuSense and Dahua's WizSense all run this detection directly on the camera or the local recorder, which means alerts arrive faster and your phone isn't buzzing every time a possum crosses the driveway or a shadow moves across the lawn. This is the single biggest quality-of-life improvement over the systems most Sydney homes had five to ten years ago, where motion alerts triggered on almost anything.
Are 4K cameras the new normal?
Yes, largely. 4K and 8MP sensors are now common on mid-range cameras from UniFi, Hikvision and Dahua, where a few years ago that resolution sat at the top of the range and carried a real price premium. The extra detail is most useful where you need to identify a face or read a number plate from a distance, such as a driveway or street-facing camera, and less critical on a camera mounted close to a door or gate where a lower-resolution image is already clear enough.
